SBCA announces August housing starts and building permit data, now available online. Below is a summary.

U.S.

August housing starts (released September 19) decreased 0.8% to 1,180,000 units. Single-family starts increased 1.6% to 851,000 units, while multi-family decreased by 6.5% to 329,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, increased by 5.7% to 1,300,000 units (SAAR).

Starts increased in 2 regions:

• Northeast (- 8.7%)
• Midwest (+ 22.0%)
• South (- 7.9%)
• West (+ 4.0%)
