January housing starts (released February 19) decreased 3.6% to 1,567,000 units. Single-family starts decreased 5.9% to 1,010,000 units, while multi-family increased 0.7% at 557,000 units. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, increased by 9.2% to 1,551,000 units (SAAR).

Starts increased in 2 U.S. regions:

• Northeast (+31.9%)
• Midwest (-25.9%)
• South (-5.4%)
• West (+1.2%)
